Did you know that your sleep can affect how much pain you have?
Sleep is essential for mental and physical health. Sleeping well is very important for recovery, immune system regulation and pain regulation.
Studies have shown that almost 50% of people that have insomnia will suffer from pain.
Even when you have only a few rough nights of sleep, the body’s pain regulation system is affected and the body tends to get more sensitive. Which means that you can wake up with a sore neck or sore back. Also, when we get to the deep sleep phase, the muscles can fully relax and recover. If that doesn’t happen the muscles can get tight and eventually sore.
Furthermore, It is important to get a good night of sleep when recovering from an injury, when the body will “reset” and work on the healing process.
Since having a good night of sleep is important to prevent aches and pains and also to help recovery, how can we improve our sleep?
There are many practices we can use to make sure we get better sleep quality. For example, establishing a bedtime routine, avoiding lights from mobile phones and computers before going to bed and trying relaxation and meditation techniques. Also, regular physical activity helps to improve sleep quality and to reduce pain levels.
