Calf and shin pain during running
Have you recently commenced running or trying to increase your loads and getting shin or calf pain? This could the result of weakness through your arch muscles particularly your tibialis posterior muscle. This muscle originates deep to your main calf muscle, the gastrocnemius, attaching onto your shin bone, the tibia.
Weakness of the tibialis posterior causes rolling inwards of your foot when planted during walking and running, known as pronation, placing the tibialis posterior on stretch. This causes repetitive strain, resulting in pain on the inside of your shin, broadly known as shin splints.
Weakness of the other calf muscles including the gastrocnemius and soleus play a major role in foot mechanics and the ability to absorb load during running.
Other contributing factors include your running mechanics, hip strength and footwear.
