Headaches: Are They Being Caused by My Neck

There are numerous triggers that can cause headaches and discerning the source can be difficult.

So, what are the key signs that suggest it may be related to your neck. Let’s look at the where, when and type of symptoms.

Where: Neck related headaches are usually located at either the base of the skull or around the side of the head towards the eye. Importantly, they are usually isolated to a single side of the head.

When: Given the underlying cause of the neck, they usually occur at a time when the neck has been implicated i.e from being in an awkward position or sustained posture for a length of time.

They can also develop post injury i.e after a whiplash event.

Type of Symptoms: Headaches triggered by the neck are usually an ache that is episodic and fluctuating.

Constant unchanging headaches or throbbing headaches are usually being triggered by something else.

If you think your headaches may be neck related, talk to your physiotherapist who will be able to thoroughly assess your neck, and treat it accordingly.
