Children’s Podiatry Part 1 – what we do

Our podiatrists at Mount Lawley Physiotherapy and Podiatry are highly qualified and all have special interests in children’s podiatry. From any biomechanical complaints through to common skin/nail conditions, our podiatrists are extremely adept at providing the best possible solution for parents and children alike. All appointments include diagnosis, full assessments, treatment and management plans.

From your baby’s first steps in the world to your teenagers running around the netball courts, healthy feet and achieving certain milestones are the cornerstones to ensure a solid foundation as your child grows. Paying close attention to your child’s feet from birth is very important to prevent injuries and abnormalities.

Common biomechanical conditions we provide assessment, management and treatment for in children include:

In-toeing/pigeon-toed

Out-toeing/duck-footed

Knock-knees

Growing pains including Severs Disease (heel pain) and Osgood-Schlatters Disease (knee pain)

Hip pain

Accessory bones and coalitions

Ankle sprains

Osteochondroses

Curly toes

Bunions

Tripping over

Toe-walking

Juvenile Arthritis

Flat feet or high arches

As mentioned previously, appointments for these conditions generally include a full biomechanical assessment including joint range-of-motion testing, gait analysis and muscle strength testing. This is followed by treatment, which can include joint mobilisations, massage, acupuncture and strapping techniques. Rehabilitation exercises, stretching exercises, footwear suggestions and orthotics can also be prescribed dependent on the condition.

Common skin/nail conditions we diagnose and treat include:

Ingrown toenails

Warts

Calluses/corns

Fungal toenails

Fungal skin infections or tinea pedis

All of these are easily treatable by our podiatrists with sterile instruments. Often ingrown toenails can be removed without local anaesthetic, but in severe cases, we can perform surgery under local anaesthetic. If you think your child requires an assessment/general check-up or is possibly suffering from any of the above conditions, book in to see one of our podiatrists at Mount Lawley Physiotherapy and Podiatry for a full assessment and treatment today. It’s never too late to look after your children’s feet.
