What are Blisters?
A blister is a small fluid-filled pocket in the upper-most layer of the skin (epidermis). The fluid in blisters is typically clear but can become cloudy, bloody or filled with pus if it becomes infected. Blisters are frequently underestimated in the amount of pain they can cause. They are commonly seen as a complaint in foot pain and activity restriction, especially with runners, hikers, walkers and individuals who are on their feet for the most part of the day!
How do Blisters Form?
Blisters often form on the feet as a result of friction and shear forces between the skin and other material such as shoes. Long periods of shoe wearing, doing a lot of exercise and sweaty feet (moisture in shoes) can all lead to the formation of blisters. Improperly fitting shoes, sandals, boots or thongs can cause rubbing over a period of time and can also form blisters.
Prevention & Treatment
It is important for you to retain and maintain normal pain-free function of your feet, so ….blister prevention and treatment of blisters is paramount. Most small blisters should heal on their own, if you find yourself with a large blister, do not pop it, book an appointment with a Podiatrist to treat you in an appropriate environment. If you find that the blister becomes more red & hot and if you see pus or blood, seek the attention of a Podiatrist or doctor.
You can prevent blisters with a few simple tricks which your Podiatrist will be able to advise you on, these include:
- Socks: Wearing clean, dry socks that can address high levels of moisture in shoes can be very useful.
- Shoes: The style is important as is the fit: length & width!
- Lacing techniques: Ensuring your shoes is laced to your foot appropriately to ensure shoes are not too tight or too loose.
- Skin protection: Skin adaptations and taping (ensure no creases in the tape) can also help prevent blisters. Keeping feet as dry as possible also tends to help prevent blisters too.
- Insoles: insoles may be used to reduce peak pressures and address shear forces during walking and running.
If you are suffering from foot pain or often get blisters, book an appointment with one of our Podiatrists at Mount Lawley Physiotherapy and Podiatry to address this issue.
