Pain in the area of the spine is commonly referred to as back pain, It can be caused by injury, trauma, repetitive strain or postural loading. It is not only the spine and it joints and discs that can cause back pain but often the muscles and other soft tissues surrounding. It is important to gather a thorough history when back pain is present as referred pain from organ dysfunction can refer to the back with similar symptoms.

Often the use of heat and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (consult with your local pharmacist) can reduce symptoms associated with back pain. It is also important to remain active, with regular breaks from sitting or lying every 30 minutes in waking hours, walking, and gentle pain free exercises. 

Physiotherapy treatment of back pain can assist in optimising recovery and providing pain relief. It is also important for the physiotherapist to assist in determining the underlying cause for back pain to provide preventative strategies so the pain does not become recurrent. Manual therapy for back pain consists of any or a combination of soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, dry needling, cupping all dependent on specific presentation of back pain.
